Circus building

in

Copenhagen

The circus building in Copenhagen was build in 1885 by Fritz Petersen. The cost of the ground was 1 million Danish kroner (133 thousand Euro ). In Copenhagen they were very proud because circus Renz was here for the opening. Later it was the great circus Schumann who made an international performance year after year until the late 60’ where Circus Benneweis took over.

The building burned down in 1914 but was build up again the same year

In 1962 the building was sold to a Danish Mega store. They were planning to take the building down and make parking places. The planes weren’t ready and in the mean time they rented the building out to Circus Schumann and later circus Benneweis. The Mega store dropped their planes many years later and they sold the building to the government of Copenhagen.

After circus Benneweis dropped to make performances in Copenhagen, the building was used to everything else than circus. It was now used to movies, concerts, boxing and a lot of other arrangements. It only happened a few times after Benneweis left the building that it was used to, what it was proposed to be used for, last time was in 1995 where Circus Roncalli was on a short visit in Copenhagen.

Now the building is owned by the government of Copenhagen and rented out on a long time basis and for the next years it is the Swedish " Wallmans Salonger " who is doing business here and we will not expect any circus performances here in the nearest future.
